I'm obsessed with two things → 🧠 coaching my clients & 🏐 playing sand volleyball.
And even though volleyball is a way for me to “take a mental break” ...
The truth?
I just CANNOT shut off from thinking about my people, because anxiety analogies and metaphors are rampant on the court.
Who are my people? 👉 Allllllllll my fellow anxiety suffers who crave a life of lesser and lighter anxiety 🤩 → you included!
So …
Let’s examine the most recent on-the-court-shit-show, shall we? Because I have a hunch you’ll relate 🤪 …
Here’s the recap ↓
My team (a casual social adult league) decided to schedule in a "practice" in preparation for the end-of-season playoffs.
Here's what happened at se “practice” ⤵️
→ we decided the day and time to meet (⭐️ great!)
→ we all showed up on time (⭐️ beautiful!)
→ we all started playing (⭐️ as expected!)
→ played for about two hours (⭐️ awesome!)
→ and then we left (💤 bedtime!)
It was a fail.
❌ 👎 ❌ 👎❌ 👎❌
Why?
Because there was no “practice”.
There was …
→ No baseline general intention set for how we were going to best use our time & energy (👎 booo! )
→ Let alone any polished, crystal clear, and collaboratively agreed upon intention (😬 double owie!)
→ The result? Everyone filled up the time by moving through the motions of what they knew how to most comfortably do, which was to just gather and “play volleyball” together (🫣 classic trap!)
To top it off, it was some of the worst I've ever seen us play, and DEFINITELY with no tangible skill improvement.
And as I stood there with my hands on my hips, observing the chaos, taking it in for all its glory … I saw my people.
No … not my volleyball people … but my anxiety people → you!
You who desires real results - a life of lesser & lighter anxiety 🤩 - but who finds yourself moving through the motions of what you most comfortably know what and how to do …
→ back onto the yoga mat you go!
→ cue in the breath exercises!
→ find the next best distraction to calm the mind!
Just the good-old arrangement of activities that position and promote you to always be “working on your anxiety” … and … with not much to show for it 🤷♀️ … am I right?
Ouch … I know … 😮💨.
That wasn’t a personal dig.
Just the classic story that everyone comes to me with!
It’s …
👉 the usual
👉 the normal
👉 the most popular experience
And I was there too - Heck! I used to be leading that parade!
The yoga, the healthy eating, the this, the that … 🔄🤸🔄🤸🔄 ... round and round again … day after day … year after year.
And of course, from the outside looking in, it can look pretty darn good!
But … part of what was driving the hamster wheel was a society that was preoccupied with prescribing me a rhythm and routine of always “working on” or “managing my anxiety” instead of just clearing most of it to begin with!
But what would happen if we set a new intention? … 🤔
One that focused on prioritizing clearing instead of managing? … 🤔
One where we 👉 FIRST 👈 create a heck of a lot less to “manage” or “work on” to begin with? … 🤔
Because this I know for sure …
Both ON & OFF the volleyball court … intention is everything.
Not just any intention,
💎 but a clear …
🤜✨🤛 mutually agreed upon ...
📆 curated in advance intention …
⚓️ that all actions remain anchored to.
→ THAT’S ← the fuel for getting results⛽️🫡🏆.
→ THAT’S ← the fuel for having a desirable experience every step of the way in your evolutionary journey (double win)!
And → THAT’S ← how you actually win.
Because both on and off the court, jumping into “practice time” (without intentionality) can really result in more of a “chaotic, messy, mediocre, getting-no-where-fast” time.
